A trivia question before we get going wanted to see if you guys know the answer to this in our Wednesday edition of trivia called what's in the brain Wednesday so this was a picture of uh the lights down in Salem the northern lights that we had on Friday last week so my question for you is what is the Aurora called in the southern hemisphere.
So you know they do happen on both sides of the globe um is it a the southern Borealis a the Aurora Australis C the polar lights or D just also called the Aurora Borealis any ideas interesting I think I'm going D going also the aora Borealis I think I think you're trying to trick us yeah that is a very Kelly Baron move to to hide the answer in.
Plain sight like that I will go I'll go B I'll say it's still in Aurora but well I don't know closer Australia why not I feel like that was a trap but I'm just walking right into it okay the answer is be you yes it is called the Aurora Australis oh interesting I listened to a lot of news Anor how to pronounce Australis of course with their accents.
I'm not gonna do it on air is it related to Australia is that why it gets the name must be yeah oh interesting that is interesting it is not the polar lights I thought that would maybe stump you guys too yeah polar lights that was my second choice good job yes so there is a different name even though it is still the Aurora and that was such a cool site.
To see last week when we had that all around the region and being able to see it here right over Portland was very cool too now as we get going on this morning uh here's your Peak out to to Ridgefield our look at a few of those high clouds shifting in we're getting blue skies now we're building up that daylight it's going to be a very nice.
Morning again a quiet morning here with some patchy clouds but a lot of sunshine to enjoy today as we head our way into our morning we'll likely hover in the mid to Upper 50s maybe the low 60s even for some but we'll warm up fast we're already back in the 60s by about 10:00 and as we hit the afternoon today A high in the 80s we're expecting some warmth.
Out there this afternoon so quiet morning not tracking much rain there are some clouds still stacking up across the coastline that'll likely be the case the rest of our mornings for the coast we'll keep it pretty cloudy as those winds from the West just build up clouds right across the coastline so expect a grayer start out there for you folks out across.
The coastline o therwise in the valley here mostly clear conditions few those high clouds rolling in but in general we're back under this quiet warm pattern of high pressure which tends to happen a lot during this time of the year we start to build up these big ridges that uh keep us dry and sometimes we get a prolonged Ridge throughout the.
Summertime where we don't see a drop of rain for months so uh we're back under this Dome of high pressure and that's going to keep us warm and dry for at least the next week or so temperatures will start to cool as that high pressure breaks down into the weekend so today is the hottest day low 80s uh still a pleasant warm afternoon tomorrow low 70s.
But we'll start to knock down those temperatures into the 60s as we hit this weekend so do expect some cooler days ahead the 60s are still very pleasant but we'll stray away from the 80s heading into this weekend so there it is some cooler air shaping up this is an upper level trough it's a weak one but we're driving in some much cooler air.
From up North here so temperatures will fall still Pleasant out there uh temperatures near normal mostly in the upper 60s which will feel very nice and we'll stay mainly dry but I do see chance uh for some showers building back up as we hit maybe next week so look at all the dry days that we still have in place this week that includes today.
Throughout the weekend will stay mainly dry there could be some pockets of light drizzle that might get squeezed out right over the valley here but no significant rain until we get to next week there have been some trends of maybe some showers setting up uh by Tuesday of next week uh throughout next week so we'll keep watching that Trend.
But again lots of dry time ahead this week to get back outside the coast today we'll likely see those clouds burning off and turn Sunny by the afternoon also temperatures warm too likely back in the low to mid-60s so not a bad day out there great day to fly kite too we'll see some Breezy condition maybe some gusts up to uh 25 mph for the coastline.
So that can be a fun activity out there under the sun today in Portland low 80s will likely hit the 80s across the valley here with a mostly sunny warm afternoon feeling a little like July than a day in May so enjoy the summerlike heat today as we hit Thursday we're cooling off a little still fairly dry as we work our way into Friday.
Morning there could be some drizzle out there we'll start out a little cloudy but still plenty of Blue Sky breaks and sunshine to enjoy as we cool off this weekend in Portland back into the mid to Upper 60s all right Kelly thanks so much let's take a look outside at the
